Cwmorthin was one of the biggest slate mines in Europe in its day working the hard stone of the Ffestiniog valley, much industrial archaeology is still to be found, with many hanging bridges, wnches wagons rails ans other machinery still in very good order, the mine is gatted and access is maintained by the Friends of Cwmorthin.
